In a good summer breeze on San Francisco Bay, Profligate will sail to weather at 9 to 11 knots, close reach at 13 knots, and broad reach at 13 to 18 knots. Our top recorded speed on the Bay has been 22.4 knots, this while carrying a reefed main and a small jib. To our thinking, anything over 10 knots is just fine, and anything over 15 knots is faster than we need to go for very long. Like all catamarans, Profligate
is a little sluggish in winds under 10 knots, particularly since
she carries such a small jib. On the other hand, the small self-tacking
jib means tacking requires nothing more than turning the wheel. |
